One of the largest cities in the world contains ancient temples standing side-by-side with modern building design. Mexico City offers all that the world’s busy, densely-populated, cities have for visitors: bazaars, shopping, museums, restaurants, and more (Mexico City Things to do).
Piramides de Teotihuacan
These magnificent pyramid ruins are closer to the city than Chichen-Itza, and are definitely worth seeing for their own sakes. They are perhaps best visited with a tour guide. Bring plenty of water, sunscreen, and comfortable shoes. The climb to the top of either pyramid is a tough one, but worth it for the view. Visitors can choose from the larger Pyramid of the Sun, or the Temple of the Moon. The pyramids are connected by the Avenue of the Dead.
Museo del Templo Mayor
During digging by a power company, an ancient artifact was unearthed: the Coyxáhuqui Stone. The resulting excavation uncovered the Templo Mayor, and the ruins of seven others. The museum contains the treasures uncovered at the site.
Xochimilco’s Floating Gardens
Flowers and vegetables are grown in plots right in the water of the Floating Gardens of Xochimilco. The waters in which these gardens are sunk are canals; the remnants of the lake on which Mexico City is built. See the gardens by paying passage on a boat piloted by a punt. Try going on a weekday to avoid the crowds.
Castillo de Chapultepec
This western castle was built in the late 18th century. From the castle itself, visitors can enjoy excellent panoramic views of Mexico City. It’s also worth taking some time to walk the scenic gardens.
Museo Nacional de Antropología
The enormous museum is a visitor’s favorite in Mexico City. In 11 halls, each of which features a different civilization of Meso-America, archaeological finds await viewers.
Catedral Metropolitana
The Metropolitana is one of the largest cathedrals in the world. It is built of bricks from the surrounding ruins of pyramids and temples. Try visiting at night to see the cathedral illuminated from within.
Mercado Coyoacán
There are many food markets in Mexico City, but this one is clean, and safe for tourists. Here are found fresh foods, and bargains on souvenirs. Local restaurants are found within the market, for a taste of authentic Mexico.
In the high mountains lies grand Mexico City. It rewards visitors with nightlife, shopping, and monuments from ancient to modern.
